What to Expect for the Rhinoplasty Recovery Process

Rhinoplasty is a life-changing surgery for people who struggle with self-confidence due to their appearance. The surgery focuses on the central feature of the face, the nose, to bring balance and symmetry to the entire face. While the surgery offers far-reaching benefits, many patients voice concern about the recovery process. We understand those concerns and created this blog to help patients know precisely what to expect from the rhinoplasty process.

Incision Techniques and Rhinoplasty Recovery

Your rhinoplasty recovery will depend in part on the incision technique used during your surgery. Dr. Kim performs predominantly open rhinoplasty, and on occasion closed, depending on how much correction her patient needs to achieve the best possible results.

Open Rhinoplasty

This technique involves an incision along the columella, the central structure in between the nostrils. Dr. Kim uses this technique for patients who require more complex adjustments, since it provides greater visibility and access to the nasal structure.

Closed Rhinoplasty

This surgery uses internal incisions within the nostrils, which benefits patients who want a more discreet correction of the nasal structure. All adjustments are made within the nostrils, leaving no external scarring.

Closed rhinoplasty is performed utilizing incisions behind the columella and along the inside of the nostrils. However, Dr. Kim’s focus is on selecting the technique that yields the best results for you, rather than on your recovery timeline.

The Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline

Rhinoplasty recovery is not a fast process for most patients, who may not see their results until 6–12 months after their surgery. This timeline is longer for thick-skinned patients as well as rhinoplasty revision patients. While rhinoplasty recovery time may vary among patients, most can expect to follow this general guideline.

Immediately Following Surgery

When you wake up after your surgery, your nose will be covered in dressings and bandages, and stents may be placed to help maintain its new shape as it heals. You may experience bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes. Patients may experience nasal congestion and light bleeding for the first few days. At this stage, getting plenty of sleep and keeping your head elevated are the best steps you can take to start your recovery.

The First Month After Rhinoplasty

During the first month of your rhinoplasty recovery, you will see significant improvement in swelling and bruising, which will help you feel more like yourself. Most patients return to work and non-strenuous activities during this time, and switch from prescription pain medication to over-the-counter medicines as needed during the first week.

The Rhinoplasty Swelling Progression

Swelling is a significant factor in rhinoplasty recovery and resolves at different speeds for patients. During the first week, swelling is contained under a cast and controlled with cool compresses and ice packs. The greater patient compliance with rest and icing, the less severe the swelling will be when the cast is removed. Most patients benefit from additional taping for the following week or two, but this also varies based on each individual’s surgery.

Swelling will subside considerably by week two or three, and many patients will feel more confident going out in public as they begin to look more like themselves. Still, some swelling can linger for as long as a year, especially in the nasal tip, so the results of your surgery won’t be fully apparent for some time. Patience is critical after rhinoplasty, as you focus on taking care of yourself and waiting to see your outcome.

Getting Back to Normal

In the second or third month after your surgery, you will make substantial progress in your recovery. You will likely be feeling good as you return to all your regular activities. Your appearance will improve significantly as bruising fades and swelling continues to dissipate. You will also begin to see an improved definition of your nose, giving you a first idea of your new, final look.
